Every year, Bumbershoot produces two distinctive posters to commemorate Seattle’s Music & Arts Festival. One—designed by a notable local graphic designer—features the official Bumbershoot design; the other highlights the work of a regional fine artist. This year, interdisciplinary artist Paul Rucker has created a graphic musical score as the fine arts offering.
“Sustenance” (shown above) is a beautiful piece that works on several levels, with the raindrops serving as musical notes and the clouds as phrase markings used in musical notation. A representation of a three-movement composition, “Sustenance” consists of contrasting parts titled “Nourishment,” “Endurance,” and “Strength.”
