Announcing Youngershoot 2013

Bumbershoot proudly rolls out another lineup this week, this announcement highlighting the fact that we truly are a Festival for all ages.  Youngershoot encapsulates all family friendly Bumbershoot activities and adventures offered at Bumbershoot. Providing programming for kids has enabled Bumbershoot to offer festival-goers an experience that the entire family can enjoy, creating an opportunity for parents and children to discover and enjoy music and art together.  And don’t forget, kids 10 and under enter free with their accompanying parents!

This year Bumbershoot has partnered with The Seattle Children’s Museum (SCM), Seattle Theatre Group (STG), the Pacific Science Center, and Radio Disney in order to curate interactive programs at the Youngershoot Kids Zone.

Open daily from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm, the Youngershoot Kids Zone features a plethora of hands-on activities.  A portion of SCM’s Fort Adventure exhibit allows kids to use their imagination to create forts ranging in creativity from tents to fortresses. Activity tables and outdoor fun include face painting, hula hoops, chalk drawings and block building.  Kids can also mold homemade playdough into various shapes, make extravagant sun hats from recycled newspaper, dig up vegetables and plant bulbs while learning about the plant life cycle during imaginative garden play, and explore hands-on science experiments brought to you by the Science Center.

Feeling a little more artistic than experimental? Radio Disney will provide Disney arts and crafts, games and Karaoke for the Selena Gomez and Hannah Montana masses!

A handful of  interactive performances are sure to get the younger generation ecstatic about the Festival. Come celebrate Music and Movement with Nathan! where we help each child discover their own voice and method of expression. Or play foot-stomping music with music educator and his fabulous nine piece band Brian Vogan & His Good Buddies.

Join Ocheami, back for their third year, sharing West African arts, dance  and storytelling! Or watch a performance by the Evergreen City Ballet, and then learn some ballet basics to experience what it’s really like to be a dancer.

While the activities seem endless, don’t forget that outside of the Youngershoot zone, Bumbershoot also features performers that are exciting and safe for the entire family to enjoy. From the buoyant pop of mainstage act fun. to the timeless cool of Maceo Parker, the Films4Familes series, or theater simple’s Owl & Pussycat,  the exuberant Total Experience Gospel Choir and a diverse selection of homegrown musical acts as well as fascinating visual art offerings like Magic Sync and The Enigma Machine, there’s plenty of multi-generational action to be absorbed and experienced.

Youngershoot’s programing lineup also marks the beginning of our Send a Kid initiative! Bumbershoot believes that all children benefit from discovery and exposure to music and art. Starting today and running for one week, when patrons purchase a Bumbershoot ticket, One Reel will match the purchase and provide tickets to an under-served youth from the community and an accompanying adult for a day of exploration, imagination, and culture.

From 6 months to 60+, Bumbershoot provides something for everyone, and with your help, hopes to reach all communities in the region! So, whether it’s your son’s big wish to create a castle fortress with friends, or your daughter’s dream to be a ballerina, we’ve got all the programs you need to tackle Bumbershoot as a family! We hope to see you at Youngershoot!
